The Texas Aggregates Concrete and Association (TACA)

The Texas Aggregates Concrete and Association (TACA) will again be sponsoring the annual National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) High School Essay Contest.  The contest is open to Texas High School students who will be age 16-18 at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year.

The winner from Texas will have their entry forwarded to the NRMCA for consideration at the national level.  The winner will be selected from the winning state entries generated from high schools around the country.  He or she will be flown, expenses paid, along with a parent or guardian, to NRMCA’s 2008 convention in Las Vegas, Nevada in March.

Industry executives and college/university faculty members with concrete-related backgrounds will judge the entries.  In addition to being NRMCA’s guest at the convention and being introduced at the convention’s awards session, the winner will also receive a scholarship of $5,000 if they enroll for freshman year in a concrete-related curriculum such as the Concrete Industry Management programs offered at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, California State University at Chico, and Arizona State University in Phoenix.  Other eligible programs would include those at Alpena College in Michigan or Rhodes State College in Ohio, or other majors directly related to the concrete industry, such as those for construction materials science/engineering.  Should the winner choose not to enroll in a concrete-related curriculum he or she will receive a $2,000 scholarship for the freshman year at the college of his or her choice.

All state entries will receive a certificate of appreciation for entering the contest along with a notification of the winner.  The Texas winner will receive $2,500 to attend a college with a concrete-related curriculum or $1000 for a non-concrete related curriculum from the Texas Aggregates and Concrete Association.
