Poetry interpers compete against a number of students (usually 6 to 8) normally from different schools. Prior to competition interpers select a poem or poems that fit within the categorical themes, blends, splices, and weaves poems together to create a program of poetry pieces, prepares an introduction, and rehearses their interpretation to make sure it fits into a 7-minute time limit. Interpers do not “perform” their poetry program; they offer the judge a well rehearsed interpretation of the author’s intent.
