We currently have 17 Extemporaneous students. Extemporaneous speakers (Extempers) compete in one of two categories; informative or persuasive.
Extempers compete against a number of students (usually 6 to 8) normally from different schools. Extempers spend a lot of time compiling newspaper and magazine articles relating to current events locally, nationally, and inter-nationally; this information is then categorized, filed, and carried to competition. Extempers choose their category prior to the contest. The contest requires the extemper to select one topic out of five (from a pool of twenty topics), search through their research for information on the topic, and prepare a 7-minute speech within 30 minutes. A “top notch” extemper cites their research in the speech.
