Communication Graphics follows a lecture/demo/lab format. It focuses on the creation
of content, concept, context and design; the "message,"
audience, project development, project production and technique
via digital graphics, digital imaging and illustration. Students
produce artwork using photo editing, illustration, as well as design,
layout and animation software (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator,
Adobe Pagemaker, Bryce, Dreamweaver and Flash). The class develops
the practical knowledge of working in different color modes meet
industry standards and requirements for media output, such as: print,
CD-ROM and the Web.
While
a strong emphasis is placed on the "completion of a product"
by achieving project goals and objectives, the assessment of "process"
and "consistency" throughout a project is just as important.
Once a project topic has been assigned, students brainstorm, outline
objectives, and write proposals. Students follow with manual sketches,
and then produce the artwork on the computer.
Throughout
projects, class exercises, homework and quizzes, students must follow
instructions, apply assignment criteria, and demonstrate good work
ethics, leadership, initiative, teamwork, dependability, work habits,
discipline, self-management, accountability and responsibility.
An
outcome of Communication Graphicsis to produce "original" portfolio
content; therefore, students will abide by copyrights laws! Students
must include in their digital art projects only "original digital
art," (digitize non-published images and original photographs).
Also, all typography and written content must be original. The importance
of "originality" and "original ideas" is of
great importance to the integrity and development of the "true
artists."
All
projects are kept in a binder and in digital format.
Class projects range from "art" production, book and magazine
design, publicity, logo design, packaging desig to web animation.
Students work on individual as well as team projects.
