ABSENCES -- When you’re absent, you must bring a signed note from a parent (to make the auditors happy) stating the reason for the absence to the attendance clerk and pick up a “blue” slip before attending class.  A student who is absent from school for any reason, other than for a documented health care appointment, will not be allowed to participate in school-related activities on the day of the absence.  A student with an unexcused absence will receive no higher than a 70 on make-up work.  When absent for a health care appointment (doctor, orthodontist, etc.), the student must bring in a note from the health care office on official letterhead…and, if the student is present for part of that day, he/she will not be counted absent.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL

Just a few reminders that will help us keep all children safe…

·        Do not drop students off before 7:00 A.M.; there is no supervision before this time.

·        The building will open at 7:30 A.M. for student entrance.

·        Parents are asked to use the covered drive-through for dropping off and picking up students.  Please do not park on FM 775 or drop students off at the high school campus or in the Elementary parking lot.

·        Students are not allowed to leave the elementary campus and walk home or to the other campuses.  Older siblings may walk to the elementary school and pick up their brothers and sisters.  A bus is available to take students to every home in our district.

ASSIGNMENT BOOK -- The first one is free; the second one will cost $3.  The purpose of the assignment book?...to help you remember homework and stay organized.  It is also a good way to remember to bring things like lunch money or a permission slip.  Your teachers will use it as a teaching tool and will ask you to write your homework assignments (and anything else you need to remember) in it each day.   It also allows parents and teachers to communicate back and forth.

BIRTHDAYS & CUPCAKES – Every child on campus will be honored with a birthday cupcake on his/her birthday in the cafeteria at lunch.  Please check with your child’s homeroom teacher before sending any food/birthday items to school.  A birthday snack may be provided in the classroom, but must still meet the guidelines set by the Texas Department of Agriculture.   Interested parties may read more about the guidelines on the La Vernia Web page.  Click on departments, nutrition and then policies. These guidelines are for all campuses.  If you have ay questions you can also contact the Child Nutrition Director:  Vicki Spessard (830) 779-2181 ext.  2224  or  vicki.spessard@la-vernia.k12.tx.us.  See the student handbook for more details.

BUSES – For information about buses and bus routes, please contact Theo Gerlich, Director of Transportation, at 830-779-2181, ex 3228 or the assistant principal, Glenn Hendrickson, at 830-779-2181, ext 4230.

CAFETERIA - New This Year:

·        Deposit money into your child's lunch account online from anywhere!  For more information, please see our website at www.lvschools.net.  You can also check your child's account balance online.

·        Because the lunch room is very busy during lunch, money may be deposited into student lunch accounts before school.

·        Parents may only bring lunch for their own children.  It is against the rules for parents to bring any food for other children or to share the food they bring with other children.

·        If you have any questions about the cafeteria or your child's account, contact the cafeteria supervisor, Dana Hurley, at 779-2181, ext 4232; she will be happy to help.

·        Cost of Lunch For Students:      Breakfast:  $1.50       Lunch:  $1.75

CALENDARS – All students on the elementary campus are given a discipline/academic “calendar” every two weeks (every six weeks for 3rd graders) as a means of communication between teachers, students and parents.  Parents are encouraged to check calendars daily for information about behavior and missing or incomplete work.  Lost or damaged calendars will result in disciplinary action.  Calendars are to be kept in a plastic sheet protector in the three-ring binder at all times.

CELL PHONES -- Cell phones (and other communication devices) are not allowed at school unless special permission is granted in advance by the principal.  Students violating the rules for having device on campus will have it confiscated and will face disciplinary action.  Confiscated communication devices will only be released to parents.

CHEWING GUM -- Chewing gum on campus will result in an automatic D-Hall.  Please don’t even bring it on campus or on the bus.  If you give gum to a friend on campus, you can expect a D-Hall, too.

DRESS CODE -

·        For girls:  dress modestly…no midriff, nothing revealing (low cut or tight), shorts no shorter than the bottom of your fingertips when you are standing up straight with your arms extended at your side, no tank tops, short tops, tops with straps (such as spaghetti or other narrow straps), un-hemmed or torn garments, writing across the seat of any garment, or overly long shirts…earrings permitted in ears only.

·        For boys:  All shirts tucked in, no overly-long sweaters and sweatshirts, no sagging pants or shorts, no caps, or un-hemmed or torn garments.  also, hair should be no longer than the top of the collar in the back or below the ear lobes on the sides or below the eyebrows…and no earrings.

LATE WORK – Assignments not turned in by the due date will have the following deductions:  20 points will be deducted for late work not turned in the first day it’s due, 20 more points off on the second day and a zero will be given for assignments not turned in by day 3.

LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY - A student must be signed out in the office by a parent or guardian in order to leave campus before the end of the day.  We really hate for you to leave early because we will be teaching right up until the end of the day.  If you have to leave early, check with your teachers for any work you will miss and have it done by the next day.

LIBRARY HOURS - 7:30 A.M. – 3:30 P.M. daily

LOST & FOUND – “Lost and Found” for clothing will be located in the gym.

LUNCH – Students bringing their lunch may eat in the courtyard in building one.  Parents may bring lunch for their child, but not for other children.

MAKE-UP WORK – A student will be allowed one day for every day he/she is absent to turn in make-up work.  A student or parent may call and request make-up work before your teacher’s conference time.  We will make every effort to have the assignments ready by 3:30 that afternoon.

PROBLEMS & COMPLAINTS– The best way to handle problems in the classroom or on the playground may be to go through your child’s homeroom teacher first.  If the problem is not resolved, the next step is to contact a campus administrator.

PUBLIC DISPLAY OF AFFECTION (PDA) – No hugs, kisses, hand holding or other physical displays of affection between boyfriends and girlfriends on campus (including buses) or at school functions.

REPORT CARDS  - Please return report cards within 2 days

SCHOOL HOURS – 8:15 AM – 3:30 PM

TARDY TO SCHOOL - Tardies affect the way a student's day starts.  It is so very important for students to arrive at school and be in class without being rushed.  Students who are tardy to school (are no in class at 8:15 A.M.) will be counted tardy.  Tardies will be marked on the student's calendar along with the reason.  A student who is excessively tardy will face disciplinary action.

TEXTBOOKS – Keep your textbooks covered at all times.  To avoid being charged for damages, do not put adhesive book covers on textbooks.  Your name must be written in ink in the proper place in all of your textbooks.

VISITORS - All visitors to the campus are required to enter the campus through the doors by the office and check in with the receptionist who will ask you for a valid driver's license for identification.  The driver's license will be scanned and the visitor will be issued a pass for the day.

WHERE STUDENTS CAN GO AND WHEN THEY CAN GO THERE – This refers to before and after school, during lunch and between classes…all the times you are not in a structured classroom setting.  The rule of thumb is that if you can’t see an adult supervising the area, you are in an unsupervised area and need to move.  Students are not allowed in the buildings during lunch.
