La Vernia ISD TIFB PS8 Grant Summary

La Vernia ISD's Technology Task Force evaluated all schools and found disparities in access to the network, disparities in computer distribution, lack of network resiliency and security, the need for access to the LAN in areas impractical to cable, the need for a more powerful, scalable webserver, the need to increase bandwidth to the ESC-20 ISP, and the need to better utilize T-Star.  Also, teachers needed more technology training.

La Vernia proposed to create parity of access and fulfill these needs through the application of advanced technologies.   The goals of this proposal were to:

1.      Provide equitable, reliable, resilient access to all resources.

2.      Improve the security of the network.

3.      Improve the utilization of all resources.

4.      Enhance the scalability of the network and build for the future.

5.      Provide specialized training for targeted teacher technology groups.

The Technology Task Force formulated the following objectives and applied TIFB PS8 grant funding to meet these goals:

1.      Added UPS Battery Backups to protect switching equipment and add resiliency.

2.      Increased network security by adding a Cisco PIX firewall to prevent intrusion.

3.      Purchased new computers to increase student access at the Middle School.

4.      Increased network access by adding network drops, switches and wireless Ethernet.  Drops were added in the High School Math Wing and Library, in two new labs at the Elementary, and wireless Ethernet was installed in the High School Cafeteria, Gym and the Middle School Gym.

5.      Relocated the T-Star satellite dish downlink equipment to the High School Library for maximum utilization.

6.      Installed a new web server and router to increase bandwidth, performance and scalability.

  1. Increased technology literacy of teacher support teams through TIFTECH training.
