What children eat while they are in school is highly regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  In Texas, the School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs are administered by the Texas Department of Agriculture.  LaVernia Child Nutrition Department ensures that these Federal and State Guidelines are met and sometimes even superseded.

Federal Law states:

“. . .Elementary Schools may not serve competitive foods (or allow access to them) to students anywhere on school premises throughout the school day.”

“. . .Middle Schools may not serve competitive foods (or allow access to them) to students anywhere on school premises from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after the school’s meal period”

“. . .High Schools may not serve competitive foods (or allow access to them) to students during meal periods in areas where reimbursable meals are served and/or consumed”

What does this mean for parents????   You may not bring in food to share with a student who is not your child.  It is not a LaVernia Decision, it is a FEDERAL LAW.  A competitive food is described as any food not served by the Child Nutrition Department that is in turn regulated by the U. S. Department of Agriculture.  To view the entire policy, click on the link below.
